The Art of Teaching at TCA

Teaching is not a delivery system for information. It is the formation of the mind and heart.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

ARISTOTLE

A Calling, Not Just a Career

To teach at Tulsa Classical Academy is not merely a profession, but a calling. The renewal of education begins in the renewal of the teacher. The teacher stands daily before young people who are learning how to think and live. Join the team at TCA to help form hearts and minds, teach a classical curriculum, and cultivate virtue in yourself and your students.

What are we looking for?

Tulsa Classical Academy is the first public, classical, charter school opening in the state of Oklahoma in the Fall of 2023. TCA follows the Hillsdale/BCSI model using a content-rich curriculum based in classical liberal arts and sciences with a strong emphasis on civic education.

TCA Teachers facilitate learning for students in order to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Teachers enable and work with parents and students to develop competencies and skills in order to function successfully in society. TCA Faculty provide leadership, motivation, and rigorous education for all students.

What We Believe About Education

At Tulsa Classical Academy, we believe that true education is rooted in truth, goodness, and beauty. It is not driven by student-centered relativism, but instead allows teachers to lead and direct the classroom and study matter. Technology supports instead of replaces teachers, while students learn content that matters deeply for all of life.

Pedagogy

The TCA teacher drives the instruction rather than allowing technology and worksheets to do the work for them.

Leadership

A teacher is the leader of young men and women in the pursuit of intellectual and moral excellence.

Curriculum

Teachers at TCA understand that a liberal arts curriculum communicates the order and reality of universal natural truth

Culture

The teacher is at the heart of a strong, healthy school culture - the animating spirit of the school.

Grammar School (K–6)

  • Habit formation
  • Phonics-based literacy
  • Concrete → abstract math progression
  • Teacher as primary guide (in loco parentis)

Upper School (7-12)

  • Subject mastery + interdisciplinary unity
  • Dialectic and reasoning
  • Teachers model cardinal virtues
  • Push students just beyond current ability

“What nobler employment, or more valuable to the state, than the man who instructs the rising generation.”

Cicero from De Oratore

Portrait of a TCA Teacher

To teach in such a school is not merely a profession but a calling. The teacher stands daily before young souls who are learning how to think and live. If we wish to cultivate virtue in our students, these virtues must first be alive in us. The renewal of education begins in the renewal of the teacher.

Prudence

Exercises sound judgment in teaching and life

Justice

Recognizes the inherent dignity in every person

Courage

Pursues truth even when it is difficult

Temperance

Engages in thoughtful, civil discourse

Humility

Receives feedback with humility
